At Lehman’s retail store in Kidron, Ohio, we’re almost ready to “open the counter” of our brand-new in-store cafe (aptly named after one of our most beloved product lines, cast iron cookware). Located in the center of the store, the Cast Iron Cafe features hot soups, signature sandwiches, wraps and freshly made salads, plus gourmet coffee drinks and hand-dipped ice cream treats. There’s also snack-type fare like pastries, hot dogs and brats, nachos, and a variety of beverages (such as Lehman’s old-fashioned soda pop). The cafe has lots of indoor and outdoor seating – indoors, conveniently next to the spacious book area and outdoors, rubbing shoulders with one of the realistic farm murals painted by a local artist on the exterior of the store.
Intriguingly, most of the menu items are named after long-term employees of the company. (Reading the menu is essentially like reading a charming, condensed history of Lehman’s.) Examples include Jay’s Java (drinks featuring fair trade coffee) Galen’s Favorites (gourmet sandwiches), Herb’s Garden (fresh salads) and Pearl’s Jewels (sweets and pastries). After browsing the varied menu, I personally can’t wait to try, well, one of everything.
One example: the Buckeye Chicken Sandwich. This “tropical delight” consists of tender, grilled chicken breast, pineapple slices, melted Provolone cheese and BBQ sauce, served on Italian bread or grilled Panini with your choice of apple slices or potato chips. (Buckeye chickens were developed by Mrs. Nettie Metcalf of Warren, Ohio, and appropriately named after the “ Buckeye State.†Buckeyes are unique in the American Class of chickens in that it is the only breed created entirely by a woman.)
Next time you’re in the neighborhood, be sure to stop by the Cast Iron Cafe, in Lehman’s. Whether you’re in the mood for a full meal, a snack or just a hot cup of coffee, we can’t wait to share our hospitality with you.
