Small Business Saturday is THIS Saturday! Come visit our store in Kidron and see our beautiful Christmas decorations and displays.
Editor’s Note: In celebration of Small Business Saturday (Nov. 24th), today we’re sharing with you a glimpse of the shops in our hometown (Kidron, Ohio). Enjoy!
I love needing to travel only a short distance to have a good time. Spending time and money at local shops in my area is great because it’s quick, fun, personable, and the people there know my name! I can walk into a bookstore just a five-minute drive from my apartment and they greet me personally when I walk in the door. I’m a regular at the fair-trade shop, coffee shop, and several restaurants in my neighborhood. It’s so nice to be known where I go, and to know the people that are benefiting from my purchases personally. It also feels great to know that I’m contributing to the growth and maintenance of their stores and helping to keep them going.

We’ve added a video and photos below for your enjoyment, but as other customers have told us, the photos don’t do them justice. This is something you’ll want to see in person!Continue reading →

Our favorite foods and our best memories are inextricably linked. The flavor and aroma takes us back to those times of laughter, joy and camaraderie. And, what food is a better sweet memory starter than ice cream? What are your favorite ice cream memories? Running after the ice cream truck as its bell rings its way past your house? Sharing the cold sweetness with cousins at a summer family reunion?
Mine revolve around the ice cream freezer, because we always like to make our own. In fact, our hand-cranked ice cream freezer took on mythical importance to our family life. It was like an ice cream fount of goodness, the horn of plenty from which sprang sweet, creamy cold-on-a-hot-summer-day fun. Continue reading →
“Come on, Mattie,” Eli called. “I’m waiting to start picking!”
Mattie hurried out the back porch door to find her brother holding two berry baskets and grinning. It was late spring, and the strawberries were coming fast now. The children’s job was to keep them picked as they ripened. Some could be sold to passersby, but the majority of the sweet red berries would be turned into sparkling jars of homemade jam and neatly stacked on the canning shelves in the cellar. Maybe it’s the first time you hear Christmas music playing over the radio, and even though you think, “It can’t be time for this yet” you can’t help but feel a little moment of childhood giddiness. Or maybe it’s the first evening the temperate drops and you’re cuddled in a blanket sipping the newest holiday flavor of coffee or tea. Sounds heavenly right? Continue reading →

“Eli,” Mamm prodded gently. “It’s time to get up. Breakfast is almost ready and Datt’s just coming in from the barn.”
