Get Cooking at May Daze with Lehman’s and Fire Pie Pizza Ovens

When you join us at our May Daze event on May 5, be sure to bring your appetites! We’re pleased to be the exclusive retailer for Fire Pie Pizza Ovens, made right here in Ohio. (We’re also really happy to bring another Ohio business under our roof!)  The oven (at right) will be stoked, and Fire Pie’s owner, Scott McMiller, will join us in making pizza samples for you to try all day long.

Fire Pie OvenLast year, McMiller took a look at similar wood-fired ovens retailing for thousands of dollars, and realized that he could build patio pizza ovens that would cook just as well for a lot less–and create a few jobs near Dayton, Ohio, where his production shop is based. He showed a prototype to Lehman’s Kidron retail store staff this spring, and everyone realized McMiller was on to something big with his 1,600 pound, high-efficiency firebox oven.

Lehman’s guru of grills, Eddie Fridley, explains how the oven works: “The wood is added through the mouth of the oven, just as in traditional Italian pizza ovens, and there’s small chimney on top. There’s a propane starter to light the wood, and then the fire warms the cooking surface at the front of the oven. It takes 10 to 20 minutes to get to temperature, and then depending on the crust thickness, the pizza will be done in two to five minutes.” The cooking surface is super-smooth firebrick (see middle photo at right), and the pizzas cook right on the brick, resulting in a delicious crispy crust with a subtle smoky flavor. The pies are put in and taken out of the oven on a traditional pizza peel or very large spatula.

Fire Pie Oven Interior“The oven is entirely self-contained. It can go on a stone counter on a patio, or customers can have a base custom-built to hold it, ” Fridley said.

In the last photo at right, you can see the base that Lehman’s retail staff built on our back patio–it’s easy to see it will be sturdy enough to handle the 1,600 pound, high-temperature oven that’s going on top! When you purchase your own oven, you can design and build the base that suits your needs.

After your pizzas are done, the Fire Pie Oven doubles as a heater, keeping your outdoor area warm on cooler summer nights.

The oven is handmade from specialty high-temperature tolerant concrete, with a stone collar at the oven opening. The copper corners on Lehman’s model stove are available by special order. Stop by the store and ask for Eddie to find out more about this exciting new made-in-Ohio product!
