What “Amish-Made” Really Means

What’s so great about Amish-made?

Lehman’s, in Kidron, Ohio, is located in the heart of the largest Amish community in the world.

Many people think of Lancaster County in Pennsylvania when they think of large Amish communities, but Lancaster’s community of 30,000-35,000 is actually second in size to the approximately 40,000 Amish that live in southern Wayne and eastern Holmes County, Ohio. These Amish people are our neighbors, our friends, our customers and our vendors.

Lately Amish people everywhere have taken a hit to their image and character because of television shows like Breaking Amish, Amish in the City and Amish Mafia. Although most “reality shows” are anything but reality, it is sometimes difficult to live down the antics of a few who give a bad name to many.

As most people are aware, most bachelors and bachelorettes are not like those on The Bachelor and The Bachelorette, and most housewives are not like The Real Housewives of Atlanta. It should not be surprising, then, that most of the Amish are not like those depicted in the “reality” shows in which they are featured.

Sure, there are some bad apples in every basket, and the Amish population is no different. The popular view of the Amish is that the youth go through rumspringe, a time of running around and sowing lots of wild oats. For some this is true, but for many it is not.

Here’s what is special in our minds about Amish people and their work. In most cases, the Amish people we know are hard-working, they are devoted to their families, they are careful craftsmen, and above all they are attempting to live out their faith in God.

When we say “Amish-made,” we are referring to the fact that the item is made by a craftsman who cares about his work, who is careful about the end product he produces, who works hard and who has a certain amount of pride in the product he produces. “Amish-made” means high quality, carefully made (often by hand), and a good value for your money. And, by inference, that high-quality item is, of course, made in America.

Don’t let “reality” fool you.

I an not Amish but I was insulted by the so called “reality” shows. I think the Amish should get a good lawyer and sue everyone involved in those derogatory presentations.

Who are Lehman’s customers anyway?

Our customers want products that actually work. Although some people think that having an old-fashioned oil lamp on the mantle looks pretty, our customers want that lamp to work when it is needed.
