Summer Pizza 2: Grill Up A Cheeseburger…Pizza!

Every year when the weather begins to warm up and the evenings aren’t so dim, I get the urge to cook everything on the grill. But this year, I decided I wanted to look for new and creative ideas for grilling. I began to think of all the foods I love and then it hit me! Why not try pizza, my favorite food of all? It’s definitely a unique approach to grilling and I’m always up for a good challenge. The great thing about pizza is that there are so many different ways to create a great tasting meal catered to each individual’s taste buds. I began to think about what kind of pizza I’d like to make and of course, it had to include a lot of cheese.

After flipping through Pizza on the Grill by Elizabeth Karmel and Bob Blumer, I found a recipe for a cheeseburger pizza, on page 84. It sounded delicious, and a perfect fit for my first-time grilled pizza ambitions.

I fired up the gas grill, which heats up quickly–I love that, because I can get right to cooking. While the grill was heating up, I began to prepare the dough and toppings.

Pizza on the Grill features an easy dough recipe, so I made that first. While the dough was resting, I gathered my toppings: ground beef, sliced American cheese and bacon. I quickly browned the beef and crisped up the bacon.

Once all the preparations were complete, the grill was hot, and I could pop the dough on the grill to cook. It doesn’t take long for the dough to cook on a grill, and before I knew it, I was ready to add all of my toppings, and finish cooking the pizza.

The whole process of making a non-traditional meal on the grill was new for me. The pizza came off the grill hot and tasty, and I was pleased and proud that my grilling experiment ended up so deliciously.

I highly recommend the Pizza on the Grill cookbook, as well as utilizing the grill for dinners in the spring and summer months. Think about having a pizza cookout! Family and friends will love attending a cook out with a unique and appetizing theme like this.
