Many of the countless benefits the natural products in this world offer us are cosmetics, and utilizing them can save you money and enhance almost any part of your appearance. Here are some of my favorite at-home remedies for naturally nourishing your skin and hair.
Many people ditch their harsh, chemical-based cosmetics in favor of the gentle, safe, all natural products that you may already have around your house because of the drying, damaging effect traditional skin care products can cause. I guarantee, if you look hard enough, you can find something in your fridge, pantry or cupboards that will give you the results you are craving. Not only are you treating yourself well, you are helping keep the environment (including the landfills) safe from chemicals.
For my skin, my favorite product is raw honey. The gritty texture exfoliates like a dream, while the antioxidants fight off acne. Just massaging a few teaspoons of honey into your face and then washing it off with warm water leaves skin clean and smooth. Adding cinnamon to this treatment helps reduce blemishes and shrink pores. Olive oil adds moisture to skin and lemon juice kills acne-causing bacteria. All four of these ingredients create a facial that helps clear up and moisturize your skin.
If you can handle the smell, putting garlic on blemishes can speed up the healing process. Plain yogurt detoxifies skin, gets rid of dead skin cells, and also tightens pores and relaxes wrinkles. All of these treatments should be left on for 15-20 minutes, before being thoroughly rinsed off with warm water.
For hair, coconut oil works wonders. Apply to wet hair and leave in for about an hour to moisturize, strengthen and heal hair like you wouldn’t believe. Eggs contain proteins that remove oil and moisturize. Using whole eggs in your hair may feel strange, but it will soften your hair and make it oil free. This treatment should not be used more than monthly, but using egg whites only can be used twice a month.
