Here’s a traditional recipe for making spritz cookies (shown at right), also known as pressed cookies.
You’ll need a cookie press in order to make these cookies. (You can buy a cookie press at our store in Kidron, OH.)
You can also add food coloring to the dough for some color and variety. If you want sprinkles, add them immediately after you pull them out of the oven. (If you wait until they completely cool, the sprinkles won’t stick.)
Classic Spritz Cookies
This recipe comes from my grandmother, who makes these cookies every Christmas. She’s been using this recipe for so long that she does not remember where she originally found it. She did tell me that she has adjusted the amount of flour over the years because she had trouble getting the cookies to form.
- 1 c Crisco
- ¾ c sugar
- 1 egg
- 2 c flour
- ½ tsp baking powder
- Dash of salt
- 1 tsp vanilla
In a large mixing bowl, cream Crisco, while adding sugar gradually. Add unbeaten egg; mix well.
Add flour, salt, baking powder and vanilla.
Fill cookie press. Form cookies on ungreased cookie sheet.
Bake at 375ºF for 10-12 minutes.
Editor’s Note: We’ll be publishing a couple of cookie recipes a week as Christmas gets closer. Hope one of our favorites becomes one of yours!
