Natural Cleaning Alternatives for Your Home and Life

We are here to help people on their journey to a simpler life.  You may choose to live off grid and raise cows and chickens or you may choose to take small steps to make your life simpler and healthier, like growing your own food and eliminating chemicals from your home and your body.

Keeping your home clean and healthy doesn’t require a shelf full of specialized chemical detergents, sprays and polishes. Here are some gentle, natural cleaning alternatives we recommend:

1. Castile Soap

Castile soap is one of the natural products you can find at Lehman’s that is all natural and has multiple uses.  You can purchase the concentrated version and wash your dishes, your hands, your dog, and even your veggies.   You can clean your house, your car and even your baby with castile soap.

Castile soap is made with olive oil, coconut oil and sunflower oils, honey and jojoba oil so it’s very gentle.  Because it is concentrated, it is also very economical – a little goes a long way!  There is no reason to have multiple harsh cleaners full of chemicals when you can have one all-natural cleaner that can do it all.

2. Goat’s Milk Soap

For personal care, the all-natural soothing power of goat’s milk soap is a wonder.  The natural emollients found in goat’s milk, which is rich in protein and fat, acts as a wonderful moisturizer for dry or sensitive skin.  The pH levels of goat’s milk are actually close to the pH levels of human skin, making them the perfect lotion. Goat’s milk is rich in nutrients like vitamins A and B and it’s soothing for irritated skin.

3. Natural Laundry Soap

Making your own laundry soap is another way you can remove chemicals from your home and your life.

Chemicals on commercially produced laundry soap can get onto your skin and become irritating.  Many store-bought laundry soaps also contain a lot of water, which means they aren’t as economical as homemade powder soaps.  Arm and Hammer Super Washing Soda gets out dirt and stains, eliminates odors, and it’s great for kitchen grease, crayon marks and oily stains.  It is also 100% fragrance and phosphate free.

Or try laundry soap nuts, which grow on the soap berry tree and naturally saponin, a biodegradable, hypoallergenic and extremely effective detergent.

4. Lamb’s Wool Duster

For grabbing dust right off the shelves, try this tried-and-true lamb’s wool duster.  Used for generations, lamb’s wood has emollients that “grab” the dust, gently and naturally, so no chemicals are needed.
