The largest cuckoo clock in the world can’t be found in Switzerland. It can be found right here in Amish country. Located in “Little Switzerland” Sugar Creek, this clock measures more than 23 feet by 24 feet. This world-famous attraction was even featured on the cover of the Guinness Book of World Records! Admission is free, and the cuckoo bird comes out every half hour.

The best way to learn more about the Amish and Mennonite communities is to visit the Amish and Mennonite Heritage Center. There are countless artifacts and pieces of history displayed. People from all over the world come here to learn about a culture that few truly understand. The center houses an incredible 10 foot by 265 foot circular mural, called Behalt, which tells the story of the Amish and Mennonite people.

This chocolate company has been around since the 1980’s, and makes some of the best chocolates and caramels in America. Their caramels are cooked in a copper kettle over an open flame, a process which you can watch happen at the store. The quaint, Victorian style home that houses the company is a must-visit.

The Walnut Creek Amish Flea Market is more than just a place to get some odds and ends. With over 50,000 square feet of indoor shopping space, plus outdoor vendors, giveaways, live entertainment, farm animals, and a playground for kids, a whole day of fun could be spent here.

Started by the Dauwaulder family in Switzerland and brought to the United States in the 1920’s, Heini’s Cheese offers 25 varieties of cheese, as well as local meat, fudge, and ice cream. Their cheese is made with milk from local farmers, and free samples of everything can be found in the Copper Kettle Room.

Called “the door to Amish Country,” Amish Door Village is a great place to experience the best of what the area has to offer. Eat a delicious meal at the Amish Door Restaurant, get freshly baked delicacies at the Amish Door Bakery, see a show at the dinner theater, shop at the Amish Door Market, and have a wonderful stay at the Amish Door Inn, all under one roof! The Village is open year round, and holds a variety of live shows.

Spending a day at the Farm at Walnut Creek feeding animals with the family is a day well spent. Take a horse-drawn wagon around the extensive farm, seeing and feeding more than 500 animals. Zebras, giraffes, camels, kangaroos, and buffalo are just some of the species living here. This working farm is an educational experience, as activities such as plowing, canning, and quilting can be observed.

We all knew this one was coming! Started in 1955, this iconic store is a must-visit for anyone wanting to take the next step on their journey to a simpler life. Hours can be spent walking around Lehman’s, looking at oil lamps, wood cook stoves, and other non-electric and homesteading tools. And don’t forget get to look up at the museum-quality display of antiques, curated and restored by found Jay Lehman. Lehman’s has something for everyone, from cooking and baking supplies, to trendy apparel, to a huge toy section. The store also has festivals and events year round. It truly is a part of Amish Country history.
