Growing up my family was all about tradition. Our favorite? Chicken barbecues at the farm.
Looking forward to Mother’s Day, my mom shared with me that her favorite recipe was, in fact, our family’s chicken barbecue over a fire at the farm.
This recipe comes with lots of practice and has changed a little here and there over the years, but it’s a staple in our family and has since become the go-to meal for many of our graduations, big life event celebrations, and sometimes just a Sunday afternoon post-church delight.
Picture this. The windows open wafting the smell of vinegar and butter coming from the kitchen while the sounds and smells of chopped wood bellowing out of the firepit. The sounds of laughter and a little competition coming from a lively kickball or wiffle ball game being had by all of the cousins.
Sounds like a classic right? No wonder this is my mother’s favorite recipe. Though I wonder if it is the recipe for delicious chicken that she loves or the family we are so lucky to be a part of.
My grandpa’s favorite comment after the first plate of chicken was “I don’t know, it’s good but I think we better try this again soon.” Meaning there were many more chicken barbecues to come.
